In the Kathmandu valley, Newari artisans make Buddhist statues using Lost wax process.
Lost-wax process, a method of metal casting in which molten metal is poured into a mold that has been created using a wax model. Once the mold is made, the wax model is melted and drained away.
The casted statue is rough on the surface so it is made smooth by chasing work and different motifs are carved by chasing tools. It is tedious work that required a great deal of skills and time. When the statue is finely carved, it is partially or fully gold-gilded by ancient mercury gilding. Finally, the face is painted with finely ground 24-carat gold.
The statue can be filled with special medicinal substances and fully consecrated by Buddhist monks in the Kathmandu valley.
